Whatcha Watchin'?

May 12, 2014

Let’s talk television!

Most broadcast networks are just about done releasing their fall schedules, which means we as viewers get to anticipate which of our beloved shows will get axed and which will make their triumphant return. Perhaps the biggest buzz came from NBC’s cancellation of Community after 5 seasons on air. Though I am not an avid watcher, it still came as a surprise to me that a show like Community could get the boot, especially when I was hearing such positive reviews. It just goes to show you that no one is safe during network decisions...

Here is what has been announced so far:

FOX
Renewed
Bob’s Burgers, Bones, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Family Guy, The Following, Glee, The Mindy Project, New Girl, Sleepy Hollow, The Simpsons

Canceled
Almost Human, Dads, Enlisted, Rake, Surviving Jack

Ended
Raising Hope, American Dad (moving to TBS)

Picked up
Gotham, Red Band Society, Empire

**Not surprised about Dads getting canceled because I didn't expect it to last long at all. The pilot was enough to keep me from going any further (sorry Seth Green...) Although, I am disappointed that Almost Human didn't last longer than it did. I'm a huge fan of Karl Urban and I had high hopes for him.

NBC
Renewed
About a Boy, The Blacklist, Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Grimm, Hannibal, Law & Order: SVU, Parenthood, Parks and Recreation

Canceled
Believe, Community, Dracula, Growing Up Fisher, Ironside, The Michael J. Fox Show, Revolution, Sean Saves the World, Welcome to the Family

Picked Up
Mysteries of Laura, State of Affairs, Constantine, Allegiance, Odyssey, Marry Me, A to Z, Bad Judge, Mission Control, One Big Happy

**Glad to see Revolution getting canceled. Don't get me wrong--I really tried to give it a chance and even watched half the season, but my love for post apocalyptic worlds can't even get me to keep watching. I'm also quite sad to see Dracula leaving the schedule. Dracula seriously had one of the highest production values of a primetime television show I've seen in a while so if anything, I would recommend watching it for its sets and costumes. Plus, Jonathan Rhys Meyers isn't so bad as an American.

CBS
Renewed
Big Bang Theory, Blue Bloods, Criminal Minds, CSI, Elementary, The Good Wife, Hawaii Five-O, The Mentalist, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, Person of Interest, Mike & Molly, The Millers, Mom, Two and a Half Men, Two Broke Girls

Canceled
Bad Teacher, The Crazy Ones, Friends with Better Lives, Hostages, Intelligence, We are Men

Ended
How I Met Your Mother

Picked up
NCIS: New Orleans, Stalker, Scorpion, Madam Secretary, Battle Creek, CSI: Cyber, The Odd Couple, McCarthy’s

**Despite Robin William's fan base, I still expected The Crazy Ones to get canceled. Unfortunately, this is also the 2nd show that Sarah Michelle Gellar has signed onto that got canceled (Ringer, anyone?).

ABC
Renewed
Castle, The Goldbergs, Grey’s Anatomy, Last Man Standing, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, The Middle, Modern Family, Nashville, Once Upon a Time, Resurrection, Revenge, Scandal

Canceled
Back in the Game, Betrayal, Lucky 7, Killer Women, Mind Games, Mixology, The Neighbors, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Suburgatory, Super Fun Night, Trophy Wife

Picked Up
American Crime, How to Get Away with Murder, Marvel’s Agent Carter, The Whispers, Forever, Secrets and Lies, Black-ish, Selfie, Galavant, Manhattan Love Story, Cristela, Fresh Off the Boat

**Is anyone else excited to see Fresh Off the Boat? The first Asian American sitcom on American television?? I mean, WHAT?? As an Asian American myself, I'm glad to see more Asians getting represented on primetime television as more than just the math teacher or a restaurant owner. And to have a show about a whole family, too! AWESOME. I don't know how this is going to pan out, but I hope it does well and can help pave the road for more Asian Americans in the business.

The CW
Renewed
Arrow, The 100, Beauty and the Beast, Hart of Dixie, The Originals, Supernatural, Reign, The Vampire Diaries

Canceled
The Carrie Diaries, Star Crossed, The Tomorrow People

Ended
Nikita

Picked Up
The Flash, iZombie, The Messengers, Jane the Virgin

**If you've seen the new schedule, you'll notice that Bloodlines did not get picked up. After getting mediocre to poor reviews from the back-door pilot, The CW has decided to pass on the Supernatural spin-off but is still looking something to take its place. I personally vote to have a Men of Letters spin-off and have everything take place in the 1960s. Right??
Also, who ever thought that Star Crossed would even last? That show looked terrible right down to the strange tattoos and weird haircuts.
