Review: Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal, Act 1: Usagi - Sailor Moon

Children of the 90's had a lot of feels this weekend as the new Sailor Moon reboot debuted on July 5. As an avid fan of the anime, I was incredibly excited to see how the reboot would compare to what I considered the original. The series debut is very similar, if not exactly the same as the first episode of the 1992 series, following 14-year old Usagi as she finds out she's a guardian named Sailor Moon as she fights the Negaverse to save the Princess, which spoiler alert, is actually her.

But before we even talk about the story itself I just have to profess my love for the new opening theme song.

I'm not saying I was walking around my house all weekend screaming "SAILOR MOOOOO-OOO-OOO-NNNN", but I totally was. As much as we'll all miss the original theme, Moonlight Denesetsu and the English remake (Fighting evil by moonlight...), this new theme, Moon Pride by Momoiro Clover Z, is definitely just as infectious as the original and will definitely please fans.

Anyway, back to the story. Usagi is just as whiny, clumsy as ever in the new series. She's still the ever-hungry, lazy, crybaby hero that we all know and love. Sure, she has a new look and an updated hairstyle but her attitude is the same. Like I said, the debut episode is very similar to the original first episode, with Naru's (aka Molly) mom being replaced with a Negaverse baddie and selling jewelry to sap energy from their unwilling victims but we don't see Queen Baryl at all, except in the opening animation. We see Sailor Moon freak out over her new powers as she runs through the jewelry shop crying that she wants to go home, one change from the original is that her shrieking actually goes supersonic and blasts all the windows of the building and freaks out the monster. In the original Tuxedo Mask intervenes before Sailor Moon is a goner. Still not knowing what to do as she cries Luna mentions her tiara is a boomerang, which I have to admit looks way cooler than ever before.

The first encounter between Usagi and Mamoru is just as adorable as ever, with her terrible test score smacking him in the face as they exchange jests and looks of longing desire. He calls her bun-head and she insults him for wearing a tuxedo during the daytime. Ah young love.

I'm still not quite sure how I feel about the new transformation sequence since it does look a little too computer animated, but maybe I'm just still a fan of the original, here's a comparison of the two:

Sailor Moon's new outfit does look a little different than the original, with feather clips (which actually came later in the original series), new star/moon earrings (in the original she only had moons) and a fancier brooch.

Supposedly, Sailor Moon Crystal will stay much truer to the manga than the original series ever did so we should expect some differences in the series in future episodes.

All in all, I really enjoyed the new series and can't wait for the next episode. New episodes are available every 1st and 3rd Saturday on Hulu and can also be watched on Crunchy Roll
