Greenhouse Event: Chris Buck, Director of Frozen

January 19, 2015

Yesterday, I had an amazing opportunity to hear Chris Buck speak at a Greenhouse Productions event! Just in case you don't know who Chris Buck is, he was the director of, you know, only the Oscar-winning animated film, Frozen.

The event took place at CBS Studios in Studio City and was hosted by The Greenhouse, a non-profit organization aimed to provide a community for creative professionals in the entertainment industry. The whole night was very casual and folks were even able to talk with Chris when it was over. He spoke mainly about how his career came to fruition and his humble beginnings as a Cal Arts student. It's very inspiring to see him and some of his former classmates (Tim Burton, Brad Bird, John Lassetter) gain as much success as they have. Some of the main takeaways from my notes of the night were to:

  • Steal like an artist
  • Be a sponge
  • Have a little something for everyone in your audience

We also got to see some cool footage from the first tests of Frozen as well as character designs and storyboards. I love that stuff!

I didn't get a chance to talk to him as I was pretty nervous and thought I didn't have anything valuable to say! However, I did get to take a picture with the Oscar he won for Frozen!

  1. It's good to hear that people can still talk candidly about Frozen without having it turn into another cash cow. Side note, are you going to watch Fresh Off The Boat?

  2. Yes! I haven't watched F.O.B yet but I'm thinking of doing a review when I get the chance!
